Citizens across the country are communally encouraged to
spare a moment to reminisce all the struggles our leading predecessors
have been challenged with in the past as they strive to unite the
population, provoked a sense of nationalism and achieve independence.
It is not uncommon to see the vibrant red and white
colours of Indonesian flag displayed in front of every home in the
country during such memorable event.
Numerous ceremonies have taken place this morning with the
troops who raised the flag appearing so gallantly in traditional white
attire.
The most interesting Harkitnas ceremonial proceeding is the one held at Porong Correctional Institution, Sidoarjo, East Java.
Porong Correctional Institution or prison is now home to
one of the culprits behind the first calamitous Bali Bombing in 2002,
Hisyam bin Alizein or commonly known as Umar Patek.
Umar was heavily charged for multiple terrorism- related
cases which include its involvement in the creation of deadly explosives
used to cripple a recreational spot in Bali and a number of churches in
Jakarta.
He will be serving 20 years at Porong prison after
spending 3 years loitering behind the cell of Kelapa Dua Correctional
Institution, Depok, West Java.
Source told Liputan6.com suggesting the fact that the bomb maker has repented after years of continuous and extensive de-radicalization program.
The Indonesian National Counter- Terrorism Agency (BNPT)
confirms such transformation with further assuring claim suggesting that
such perpetrator has found closure and now his heart is at peace.
Hatred no longer dictates his view upon Indonesia.
Many may have difficulty in trusting such rare
transformation, but Umar was given the task this morning that
symbolically shows his nationalistic gesture despite his gloomy past.
In celebrating Harkitnas, Umar was given a special role of raising the Indonesian flag during the ceremony at Porong prison.
"Yes Umar played a symbolic role as the one hoisting the flag. We’ll see how it goes," source from BNPT told Liputan6.com moments before the ceremony at Porong prison begin, Sidoarjo, East Java, Wednesday (20/5/2015).
His role in this historic day marks a dramatic
transformation from a fugitive on the run wrecking havoc everywhere he
saw fit and wanted by at least four countries to a repented being who
finally realized that the most worthwhile fight was the battle for his
country's independence, not his against humanity.
Umar was finally captured in Pakistan on January 2011,
just 4 months following the death of his Al- Qaeda leader, Osama Bin
Laden.
Many would have seen him as an international terrorist having the fact that as the very least, 4 countries wanted him dead.
Philippines, Australia, The United States and Indonesia
spent years exerting all their power in this international- scale
manhunt.
Each country had their own reason to have Umar severely punished.
Even the U.S previously put a US$ 1,000,000 reward for anyone who can submit him to the authority. (Akp/Ein)
